Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Great breakfast

18th Century Friday Mosque

Archeological ark park

Winter Palace

Funny story – We had been discussing crime and punishment while standing here. I think we all looked up at the dark colored thing and started silently thinking about hangings. The guide followed our gaze and corrected us. This is simply the cover over the wiring for air conditioning. HA!

A sample of interesting things, including metal engraving.

Children’s Park

Mausoleum of Ismail Samani

This is the oldest building in Central Asia (from IX-X Century). Was buried under sand when Genghis Khan came through (so did not see it).

Jewish Museum

There is a long history of Jewish people in Bukhara. With the collapse of the Soviet Union they were free to leave. This little museum tells a bit of their story. The founder of Jacob & Co Jeweler may be the most famous. Our hotel was a former residence of a Jewish family.

At the hotel

The first time I was in a hotel room and an arrow on the ceiling pointed to a corner I thought that was quite ominous. Figured it out after a few more. This one – well, it’s obvious. It is pointing to Mecca.

Akbar House

The Tour Leader mentioned going to see a private antiques collection as optional. I was hanging out in my room before dinner when she knocked at my door – sort of suggesting I wouldn’t want to miss it. So glad I got up and went!

Started off at his shop, moved to his home. Like the Jewish museum, his walls had Hebrew on them and he had a Torah on deer skin. There is a coffee table book of his collection and a feature in “The World of Interiors” magazine from February 2023.
