Charyn Canyons, Kazakhstan
Took our first long drive (in a Mercedes Sprinter van) from Almaty to Charyn Canyon. Stopped at a Uyghur village to pick up some provisions for lunch. At the canyons opted to walk on the surface rather than hike down…and back up again. I guess we lost a nice view of the river, but I don’t mind. And afterward drove to Karakol ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

Yes, obviously this is a lousy photo, but what it is is like a public service announcement that in the year 2050 Kazakhstan will shift to Latin alphabet from Cyrillic. You may also be able to make out that the spelling of the country will change to Qazaqstan. The pronunciation of /q/ is more faithful than /k/
Charyn Canyon is called the little grand canyon. I like the placard with information about what animals live there. Unfortunately I saw, well, zero. Really unique flavor potato chips. Right-side drive car. Toy imitations. An infamous Lada car.

A drive full of pretty sights. Sheep possibly on their way to the same market as us. Beautiful with a capital B wrapped chocolate bars at the gas station. Note the price of petrol. That’s an old Soviet bus stop and the oversized pigeon sculpture is meant to be a peace dove.
