Day 21

Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Train from Samarkand to Bukhara

Took an express train from Samarkand to Bukhara. It was a lovely comfortable train with air conditioning, and our tour leader wisely had our luggage taken by bus to our next location so we had nothing to worry about.

The journey from the train

Plov Cooking and Miniature Painting

We went to the Usta Davron Miniature Market complex where we prepared a dish of plov, learned about the miniature painting, then got to feast on our dish. Don’t worry that the bunnies are for lunch. They are kept for their extra-fine ear hair that is used for the paint brushes.

Summer Palace

What a collection of suzani! And those curly toed shoes positively tickled me.

Cotton fields

It is cotton harvesting time and cotton fields abound. Took a moment to appreciate them.

Suzani Craft Center

Next we went to a suzani artist’s workshop and gallery. If you go to my “What I Took Home” page you will see what I took home. Not by the master herself – there just aren’t enough pieces – but from a student she assured me is a very good student. In the shop there were some vintage clothing articles. The money was found in a pocket!

Dinner and Dancing

Our hotel was in the pedestrian Old Town. We had tickets for a kitschy fun dinner and dancing show around the corner. Lots of fun.
